Abstract

The process of translation is beset with problems. On the one hand, translation demands a faithful transfer of the meaning as contained in the source text into the target language, but on the other hand, the process also requires elegance and beauty in the  choice of words and expressions. These obstacles are magnified when the source text in question is the Qur’an, because it is not a man-made creation or a work of fiction or poetry, but the word of God. This article will explore some of these problems with reference to translations of the Qur’an published by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indone-sia and three other publishers.

Abstract

Over the past two years, the Committee for the Checking of the Holy  Qur'an (Lajnah Pentashihan Mushaf Al-Qur’an), Jakarta has carried out biographical research on huffaz (those who have learnt the Qur’an by the heart) in Indonesia. This article will attempt to draw out the key linkages from that research, and will also try to trace the role and position of the huffaz  in preserving the traditions and the values of Islamic boarding schools  (pesantren). The experience of these guardians of the Qur'an as documented in this research reflects their persistence, patience and love for practising the teachings of the Qur’an, and it from these qualities that  religious students and  huffaz  emerge.  Their role in helping  to educate the people of the nation is continuously being developed, based on a sincere determination to produce people with a Qur'anic orientation.

Abstract

There are at least seven types of  qira’at  (ways of Qur’anic recitation) used by Muslims to recite the  Qur’an  whose authenticity is agreed upon by Muslim scholars. However, of the seven types of Qur’anic recitation, it is that of  ‘Asim that is used most widely by the Muslims all over the world, including in Indonesia. This article explains the factors which led to the widespread adoption and implementation of the Qur’anic recitation of  ‘Asim, based on the narration of Hafs. Apart from the high quality of its chain of transmission and the ease of recitation, another reason for the wide dissemination of ‘Asim’s recitation is the factor of (temporal) power. The spread of this version of recitation (qira’at) can be traced through publications of the Qur’an in various countries, including  in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article explores an important discipline in Qur’anic sciences, namely nasikh-mansukh  (the abrogator and the abrogated), referring to the abrogation of certain Qur’anic verses.  Although Muslim scholars are in dispute over the exact meaning and implications of the meaning of abrogation  (naskh)  in the Qur’an, nevertheless there are some points of agreement.  Neither ide either completely rejects the concept of abrogation, or vice versa, and their differences are not non-negotiable.  In some cases, the two sides will arrive at the same conclusion  in that they will both admit the existence of the concept of  naskh (abrogation) in the Qur’an, but will disagree on its meaning. One side will interpret naskh as complete cancellation and erasure, while the other side tends to interpret it as implying a delay in the implementation (or rather, evolution) of Islamic law (shari‘ah). Thus one side admits of intra-Qur'anic abrogation, while the other only admits of abrogation in extra-Qur'anic contexts.

Abstract

This article describes the conflicted genesis of the Museum Istiqlal, the history of  the creation of the collection, and the state of the institution relative to other Indonesian museums. It emphasizes both  positive developments underway and the historical problems facing the institution. Above all, it focuses on the role the museum was originally intended to serve for the Indonesian Muslim public sphere and the significant potential the museum has to better serve that mission in the national and international sphere. In short, the article emphasizes that in the context of the Government of Indonesia’s current four year plan to revive the museum sector, the problems and opportunities presented at the Museum Istiqlal are symptomatic of endemic national challenges for both the museum and the education sector.
